Lake Natron sits in the floor of the Rift Valley beneath the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai. In the morning a Maasai guide leads you across the mudflats and grassland of the southern shore to the flamingos feeding in the shallows, often in their thousands, with the volcano rising behind. Along the way you may see fossilised footprints, wildebeest, zebra and many waders. In the afternoon the walk heads up the Engare Sero river into a gorge with steep rock walls, wading in places through warm, shallow water, to a waterfall that pours over the cliff into a deep pool where you can swim. Sandals or shoes that can get wet are essential. The flamingo breeding colonies are on remote, protected mudflats, so what you see are the feeding flocks along the shore.
