Ol Doinyo Lengai is the world’s only active volcano that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, which cools almost white. It rises to about 2,960 m above the Rift Valley floor near Lake Natron. The climb is steep and on loose volcanic ash, so it begins around midnight to avoid the heat, reaching the crater rim for sunrise over the Rift Valley and Lake Natron. It’s demanding and best combined with a stay at Lake Natron; access to the crater depends on volcanic activity and local guidance on the day.
