The Great Rift Valley runs right through Kenya, and its lakes are full of life. Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake with hippos, fish eagles and boat trips, and Lake Nakuru is a national park and important sanctuary for black and white rhino, often with flamingos on its shores. From there the road leads to the Maasai Mara, where two days give you plenty of time to find lion, cheetah and leopard. It’s a varied, good-value route and ideal for a first safari.
