Two countries, two gorilla families
Every gorilla family is different, and many guests say their second trek was even better than the first. This route starts in Kigali and heads to Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park for a gorilla trek and the golden monkeys. You then cross into south-west Uganda, only a few hours' drive, to trek a second family in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where the dense, steep forest gives a very different experience. A final night on peaceful Lake Bunyonyi rounds off the journey before you return to Kigali.
Itinerary
Day by day
A sample route. We secure permits in both countries and arrange the border crossing for you.
Day 1 · Arrive in Kigali
Meet your guide, explore the city and visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
Day 2 · Kigali to Volcanoes
Drive north into the Virunga foothills, with an afternoon community visit or a walk among the farms.
Day 3 · Gorilla trekking in Rwanda
Trek to a habituated mountain gorilla family on the slopes of the volcanoes.
Day 4 · Golden monkeys & cross to Uganda
A morning golden monkey trek, then cross the border and continue to the southern side of Bwindi.
Day 5 · Gorilla trekking in Bwindi
A second trek, this time through the thick forest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, followed by a community walk.
Day 6 · Lake Bunyonyi
Drive to Lake Bunyonyi for a relaxed afternoon canoeing between its many islands.
Day 7 · Return to Kigali
Cross back into Rwanda and drive to Kigali for your flight home.
Permits & fitness
Trekkers must be 15 or older. Each trek lasts from one to several hours at altitude, and porters are available at the start.
