About the park

Tanzania’s hidden wilderness

Mkomazi lies in Tanzania’s north-east, bordering Kenya’s Tsavo West, with dramatic views of Kilimanjaro on clear days. It became a national park in 2008 and is still one of the country’s least-visited parks, so you’re likely to have the dry savanna and rocky hills almost to yourself.

The park is known for its conservation work: a fenced sanctuary protects black rhino, and a breeding programme has helped African wild dogs return. Wildlife is more scattered than in the northern circuit, but the sense of space and the conservation story make it rewarding for returning visitors, and it’s easily combined with Kilimanjaro or the Usambara Mountains.
