Ngorongoro Crater Photography Safari

The Ngorongoro Crater is a natural amphitheatre: a 260 km² volcanic caldera with walls around 600 metres high and wildlife on the floor all year. This short safari gives you two dawn descents, so you can work the crater in its best light while most visitors are still on their way down.

Best time

Year-round · June to October for clear light

Ideal for

Photographers of every level

Wildlife with a backdrop

Few places let you frame lions, buffalo or a black rhino against a wall of mountains, and the crater is one of the best places in East Africa to photograph rhino. Early morning is the time to be there: mist hangs on the rim, the light is soft and the predators are still active. Flamingos gather on Lake Magadi in the centre of the crater, hippos rest in the Ngoitokitok spring, and old bull elephants with long tusks feed in the Lerai Forest. Park rules limit how long each vehicle can spend on the crater floor, so we plan your time around the light rather than the clock. On the rim, the highlands offer sweeping views, Maasai herders and dramatic skies at sunset. No more than three guests per vehicle, each with a window and roof hatch.

Itinerary

Day by day

A short, focused trip that pairs well with Tarangire or the Serengeti.

Hippo in the water

Day 1 · Arrive in Arusha

Met at Kilimanjaro International Airport and taken to a garden lodge outside Arusha for dinner and a briefing.

Day 2 · To the crater highlands

Drive west over the Rift Valley escarpment to the green highlands around Karatu. An afternoon in a coffee farm or village, then sunset over the crater from the rim.

Day 3 · A dawn descent

Down to the crater floor at first light for lions, black rhino, buffalo and hyena in the soft morning light, with a picnic lunch by the hippo pool.

Day 4 · Second descent and departure

A second early morning in the crater to revisit the best sightings, then a drive back to Arusha for your onward flight.

Shooting in the crater

A long lens (400 mm or more) for rhino and cats, which can be distant, and a wide lens for the caldera walls. A bean bag is supplied in the vehicle.
