A lake inside a volcano

Lake Chala fills an ancient volcanic crater straddling the border between Tanzania and Kenya. Its water is famously clear and changes colour with the light, and the crater walls are home to monkeys and many birds. A steep path leads down to the shore, where you can explore by kayak. On clear days Kilimanjaro rises behind the crater rim, making it one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the region.
