Materuni is a village on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, surrounded by banana and coffee farms. A walk of about an hour each way through farmland and forest leads to a tall waterfall tumbling into a cool pool, where you can swim if you’re brave. Back in the village, a Chagga family shows you how coffee is grown and processed: you’ll roast the beans over a fire, pound them by hand while singing traditional songs, and taste the result. It’s a relaxed, authentic day and a great way to spend a rest day before or after a Kilimanjaro climb.
