Hadzabe and Datoga Visit

The Hadzabe are among the last hunter-gatherers in Africa, living in the bush around Lake Eyasi much as their ancestors did. Spending an early morning with them, followed by a visit to Datoga blacksmiths, is one of the most remarkable cultural encounters in Tanzania.

Two ways of life

The Hadzabe live in small, mobile groups, hunting with handmade bows and poisoned arrows and gathering roots, berries and wild honey. You meet a group at dawn around their fire, watch them make fire with sticks and, if you wish, follow them into the bush as they hunt small game and forage, moving fast and quietly through the scrub. Their click language and deep knowledge of the land are unforgettable. Later you visit the neighbouring Datoga, pastoralists known for their metalwork, and watch blacksmiths forge arrowheads and jewellery from scrap metal over a charcoal fire. We work with local guides from the communities, part of the fee goes directly to them, and photographs are taken only with permission.
