Jozani Forest, in the centre of Zanzibar, is the last stronghold of the Zanzibar red colobus, a monkey found nowhere else on earth. An easy guided walk brings you close to the troops, then on to a boardwalk through the mangroves.

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park protects the largest area of indigenous forest left on Zanzibar. Its star is the Zanzibar red colobus, an endangered monkey with a rust-red back, pale face and a shock of white hair, found only on the island. Several troops live near the forest edge and are used to people, so you can watch them feeding and playing from just a few metres away while your guide explains how the park and nearby villages work together to protect them. A forest trail leads past giant trees and, if you are lucky, Sykes’ monkeys and the tiny Aders’ duiker. The visit ends on a raised boardwalk through the mangroves, a vital nursery for fish and crabs. The walk is flat and easy for all ages.
