Walking safaris in Tarangire are led by an armed park ranger with your guide, and the pace is slow and quiet. The focus is less on big game, although you may see elephant, giraffe, zebra and antelope at a respectful distance, and more on the details: fresh tracks in the sand, the story behind a dung pile, termite mounds, medicinal plants and the birds calling from the acacias. Your guide explains how to move safely around wildlife and what to do if you meet an animal. Walks start early, when it is cooler and animals are active, and finish with a late breakfast or brunch. Comfortable closed shoes and neutral clothing are recommended.
