About the park
Lake Mburo is Uganda's smallest savanna park: rolling hills, acacia woodland, rocky outcrops and a chain of lakes and wetlands. It lies about halfway between Kampala and Bwindi, which makes it a natural overnight stop on the way to the gorillas.
There are no elephants or big herds of predators here, so it is one of the few parks where you can explore on foot, by bicycle or on horseback among zebra, eland and giraffe. It is also the only park in Uganda with impala.
Highlights
Explore with an armed ranger among grazing zebra and antelope.
Ride among eland, buffalo and zebra on the open hills.
See hippos, crocodiles and fish eagles on Lake Mburo.
The only Ugandan park with impala, plus eland and topi.
Good all year. The drier months, June to August and December to February, are best for walking and riding. It is particularly good as a first or last night on a Bwindi trip.
Zebra, eland, impala, topi, buffalo, giraffe, warthog, hippo, crocodile, leopard (rarely), hyena and more than 300 bird species including the African finfoot.
About 4 hours by road from Kampala or Entebbe on the main route west to Bwindi.
