Experience · Arusha · Active & on foot
Arusha National Park, less than an hour from town, is one of the easiest places in northern Tanzania to walk among wildlife. With an armed ranger, you cross open grassland to giraffe and buffalo, then enter the forest in search of black-and-white colobus monkeys.

Arusha National Park climbs from open grassland to the forested slopes of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain. Walking safaris here follow trails across the open area known as the Little Serengeti, where giraffe, zebra, buffalo and warthog graze, and into montane forest alive with birdsong, colobus and blue monkeys. Your armed park ranger leads the walk and explains how to move safely, while your guide brings the details to life: tracks, plants, and the volcanic history of the mountain above. On clear mornings Kilimanjaro appears on the eastern horizon. Without large predators such as lions in the park, walking feels relaxed, although buffalo demand respect. The walk can be paired with a game drive around the Momella Lakes or a canoe trip.
